Protecting HVAC Equipment from Power Spikes

WeSupplyTrades Team07/11/2025

Power surges and voltage irregularities cost the U.S. economy billions every year—and HVAC systems are especially vulnerable. If you've ever replaced a circuit board after a storm, you’ve seen firsthand the silent damage power spikes can cause.

Modern furnaces, air handlers, and mini split systems use electronic controls that are far more sensitive than the older mechanical systems many of us cut our teeth on. And that means every HVAC installer and technician should be paying attention to power quality—especially transient voltage events.

What Are Transients?

Transients—also known as voltage spikes or surges—are short bursts of high voltage, often lasting just milliseconds. They can be caused by:

  • Lightning strikes (even distant ones)
  • Power grid switching
  • Cycling large loads, like air conditioning compressors or motors

While major transients can take out entire systems instantly, smaller surges often go unnoticed. But over time, they quietly wear down control boards, capacitors, and electrical insulation, shortening the lifespan of HVAC equipment.

How to Prevent Transient Damage

The most effective and affordable defense is installing a surge protection device, often called a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS). These devices reroute excess voltage safely to ground before it reaches your equipment.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

A whole-home surge suppressor installed at the main electrical panel provides first-line protection for every circuit in the home or building. It’s your best bet for preventing lightning or utility-based surges from damaging multiple systems at once.

Equipment-Level Protection

For extra protection, we recommend placing point-of-use surge protectors on circuits that power HVAC systems, mini splits, or other sensitive electronics. These devices help protect against internal surges caused by equipment cycling.

Smart, Simple, and Low-Maintenance

Surge suppressors are low-profile devices that draw almost no power and require little to no maintenance. Most have a simple LED indicator—if it’s green, you're good. If it trips during a high-energy surge, it’s likely saved the equipment and simply needs to be replaced.

Protect Your Install—and Your Reputation

Nobody wants to explain to a homeowner why their system needs a new control board three years after install. A quick conversation about surge protection can save them hundreds.

WeSupplyTrades offers dependable surge protection solutions for HVAC systems and beyond. Whether you're upgrading a home panel or protecting a new mini split, we've got your back.
